Public Education

Wyoming Fire - EMS provides ongoing Public Education Programs that teach both fire and life safety to the citizens of Wyoming and our surrounding communities.  The most significant of these programs include the following:

Fire Safe House ( Junior High through Adults ):

This three-dimensional Victorian-style House provides the audience with a host of household hazards to observe and discuss.  These include tripping and falls, electrical shock, carbon monoxide poisoning, gun safety, fire hazards and fire escape plans.  It is ideal for the pre-teen about to embark on babysitting or for adults, including senior citizens that need to look for potential problems around their own home.

Freddie the Fire Truck ( Pre-school to Grade 3 )

This robotic fire truck is a real crowd-pleaser with its animated face and voice.  It is designed to capture the hearts of youngsters and large groups as they listen to a fire or life safety message.

Fire Safety Puppets ( Pre-school to Junior High )

This family of puppets is used in a variety of settings to provide fire and life safety advice to children up to age 13.  The puppet "family" includes an adult puppet suitable for the role of either a parent or teacher, school age to teenage puppets and two firefighters.  Through role-playing and discussion with their firefighter handler, the puppets can provide life saving information to a sometime hard-to-reach age group.

Operation Wooden Spoon ( Independent living seniors )

Operation Wooden Spoon is designed to combat one of the leading causes of injury involving senior citizens -- kitchen fires.  The Wooden Spoon program provides a means for seniors to remember that they have food cooking on the stove or in the oven, even when they are distracted and lose track of time.  This program, first introduced in the Northern Kentucky area, has proven to be effective in reducing the number of kitchen fires involving senior citizens.

CPR / AED Training ( Teens to Adults )

Citizens need to recognize when someone is in cardiac distress and how they can intervene by administering Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and using an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).  American Heart Association studies have shown that early intervention by citizens trained in both CPR and AED's greatly increases the chances of survival for a victim of a heart attack, drowning, or other traumatic injury.

Wyoming Fire - EMS spearheaded the effort in 2004 to provide over 30 AED's in public facilities including public buildings, schools and houses of worship throughout the City.  Citizens trained in the use of CPR and AED's who familiarize themselves with the locations of the AED's in their area coupled with the Advanced Life Support provided through Wyoming Fire - EMS can greatly reduce the number of heart attack related deaths in our community.

Class information is available by calling Paramedic Joan Krieg at 821-6836.

Child Car Seat Inspection Program ( Infant through Age 5 )

Wyoming Fire - EMS provides child car seat installation and inspection through two paramedics professionally trained in this program.  More than 60% of all child car seats and restraints are not installed properly and could reduce the protection of a child involved in a Motor Vehicle Accident.  Having your child's car seat inspected is one of the best ways to reduce your child's chances of serious injury in an automobile accident.

Inspections can be scheduled by leaving a message on the e-mail address wyomingcarseat@yahoo.com.  One of the certified paramedics will contact you to schedule an appointment when they are on duty
